In recent decades family-work reconciliation policies have been at the core of social-policy studies. Thus far, however, little attention has been paid at the relevance of the local level in the organization, financing and implementation of these policies. This represents a relevant gap in the framework of the increasing competition between cities and the growing relevance of the place of residence as a determinant of individuals’ well-being. In our study we analyse familywork conciliation policies implemented in three different medium-size municipalities in the region Emilia-Romagna. Our results shows that the city of residence has a substantial impact on individuals’ well-being and life-chances due to the relevant differences in the availability and accessibility of reconciliation policies. The possibility of accumulating location specific capital is strongly determined by the place of residence and municipality emerges as an important dimension along which inequalities are structured.
